Yu Cun Fish Head Curry (渔村砂煲咖喱鱼头) At Upper Paya Lebar Road
Every great story (mostly) always being from humble beginnings and this is no different for the owner of Yu Chun Fish Head Curry (渔村砂煲咖喱鱼头). Ah Guan started from a chef in a mixed rice and vegetable stall and finally spear heading a restaurant. As you dine in the brightly lighted restaurant, you will notice that Yu Chun Fish Head Curry’s theme consist of structures/items that are probably familiar to people from 1980s and earlier.[adToAppearHere]
Their signature dish is none other than the Curry Fish Head ($25 small/ $28 big) served with sea bream. The fresh fish head was immersed in rich and creamy curry with spiciness level of your choice!
I chose ‘original’ for bench-marking purposes. Despite my love for coconut and thick curry texture, but I found it too intense for this instance.
Deep Fried Soft Shell Crab ($12.80) is available. Coated with thick batter, I still prefer those served in Japanese eateries where I can taste the crab texture and flavour while coated in a thin crispy crust.
King ribs with salted egg ($8.8), Chicken Fillet with mango ($7.8), Specialty beancurd ($6.8), Onion omelette ($5.8), Prawn paste chicken ($8.8)and Curry Vegetables ($6.8) were the remaining dishes for that night.
Generally, standard of food served weren’t exactly gastronomical as expected from a Tze Char stall.
Despite being slightly under par in food standard, Yu Chun Curry Fish Head‘s are on top of their game when it comes to marketing and promotional gimmicks. We were ‘encouraged’ (forced) to take pictures with props during our dinner which will eventually end up on their social media platforms.
On top of that, signing up as a member was a breeze. As long as your expenditure exceeds $100, one is eligible to join and enjoy 10% discount simply by displaying your picture (below as example) on the next visit.
All in all, I had an enjoyable time with my family at this comfy eatery. However, if Yu Chun Fish Head Curry wants to improve their brand equity, they will have to step up their culinary standard to match up their efforts in image branding.
