81) Tiong Bahru Bakery (Raffles City)

“What?! $5.5 for coffee and $8 for bread?!”

I still remember that was my thoughts 2 years ago when I first stepped into Tiong Bahru bakery (Eng Hoon Street) and my second step was out of the cafe. Back then, I have yet to appreciate gourmet coffee and only had appreciation for Hainanese styled coffee and kaya toast.

However, things has evolved since then and this is my 81st cafe visit and many more to come. Nevertheless, I still love the traditional style of coffee and kaya butter toast. A superb recommendation will be Chin Mee Chin Confectionary at East Coast Road.

Today was my official visit to Tiong Bahru Bakery (TBB). However, my main intention was actually to find a place to study before heading for my coaching session and TBB was the most convenient location.

While making my order at the counter, I noticed a few coffee packages from Common Man Coffee and that got me a little confused as I remember them getting it from 40 Hands. Out of curiosity, I did a little research and Eureka!

Basically, Mr Grover and Spa Esprit Group started 40 Hands in 2010. For 3 years, their source of beans were from Five Senses Coffee Australia. Eventually, Mr Grover decided to partner them and started Common Man Coffee Roaster in 2014. During this timeline, Tiong Bahru  Bakery was birth forth by Spa Esprit Group in collaboration with celebrity baker, Gontran Cherrier. Therefore, since Spa Esprit is related to TBB and 40 Hands, as such the beans of TBB from 40 Hands eventually are from Common Man Coffee Roaster!  I hope I am accurate about this.

In short, I really did enjoy my cuppa today as it was fragrant, robust, had a hint of cocoa and the milk they used is from Meiji, thus giving that added sweetness (Brawn and Brains uses Meiji too!). It is another cafe that serves proper double shot ristretto latte (in my opinion). On the other hand, it’s an irony that I didn’t have their baked pastries but only their coffee since its recipe is from a celebrity bakery >.<
