(CLOSED) Tian Jia Fu Restaurant (天佳福小食): Tze Char & Steamboat At Upper Bukit Timah Road
Embarked on this food hunt with my parents and aunt on a Saturday evening after their 2 hours hike around Bukit Timah. Now you know where I inherited my sporty lifestyle from. I’ve got to admit that their level of dedication towards having an active lifestyle have subliminally influenced me positively.
While driving along Upper Bukit Timah Road, we chanced upon a Tze Char stall from a distance and decided to try it out.
That place was overwhelmed with patrons like us and many of them didn’t have their food served. Who would have known that the Tze Char place happened to be the famous Ga Hock Seafood Restaurant.
We left shortly after we found out that the waiting time was estimated to be 1-1.5hours.
Just a slip road away was another coffee shop which we drove past earlier and decided to give it a shot. Surprise surprise, it was an old school Tze Char eatery – Tian Jia Fu Restaurant.
Zooming in to our orders, we had Golden Chicken ($28), Crayfish ($6-8), Signature Mincemeat Beancurd ($8) and Kai Lan ($8).
Preparation for this chicken dish was painstaking and required meticulous hands of an experienced chef! Well, at least that’s how I perceived it. The flesh was separated, leaving only bare skin that was left to dry before being patched with sotong paste. Seasoned and dried, it then went through the roasting process to complete this master piece.
Yes, it was delicious, crispy and tedious, but where did the meat go? Felt that it was a little pricey and $25 was the ceiling price.
Savoury flavour from the chye po mixed with the plain tofu was match made in heaven!
Crayfish, freshness guaranteed! When asked of their recommended preparation, the waitress confidently replied that steaming it will give the best taste. Such a bold and confident statement!
True to their word, the crayfish was nicely prepared. No odour, but only pure seafood sweetness and flesh was crunchy. Smaller ones were $6 while large ones were $8.
