Swee Choon Dim Sum (瑞春点心): Value For Money Dim Sum At Jalan Besar
Located at the heart of Jalan Besar, Swee Choon Dim Sum Restaurant is no stranger to many and has been operating for almost 50 years. Seats are available indoors with air-conditioning and alfresco in the back alley for a nostalgic experience during your dim sum fare.
Good news for the nocturnal, dim sum is available for dinner and supper through the wee hours!
While at Swee Choon Dim Sum Restaurant, one will be spoilt for choice due to the wide variety of Shanghai and Hong Kong dim sum.
Meet Xuan Yi, a fellow national athlete in the Judo! She’s one of my food buddies!
Here are some signature dishes that we ordered:
Mee-Suah Kueh ($2) which is vermicelli packed into blocks, with some other bits of ingredients and fried till crispy. Quite an interesting dish as vermicelli are often soup based.
Plain Noodle and Onion La Mian ($3.5). Handmade and freshly served daily.
Shanghai Xiao Long Bao ($4) which could have been better if it was packed with more “soup”.
Law Mai Kai ($2.5), one of my favourite during my primary school days!
Har Kow ($2.4). Fully packed with a prawn.
Chee Cheong Fun (Rice Roll).
Beancurd Prawn Roll ($3). I love this, super crispy bean curd skin! Finished them before taking any shots >.<
Other non-signature dishes that we ordered:
Char Siew Sou (Baked BBQ Pork Pastry) at $2.40. Light and flaky crust, sweet and fragrant BBQ pork, how did it not make it to their signature section?
Char Siew Bao (BBQ Pork Bun) at $2.0. Same char siew fillings, but the bun was a little thick for its proportion.
Liu Sha Bao (Custard Bun with Egg Yolk ) at $3.60. Not the most “potent” fillings, but still very satisfying! What do I mean by “potent” – the custard filling should be rich in flavour that excites the palate almost immediately, as though one is going to have a sore throat. Still don’t understand what I mean? Try out the one at Mouth Restaurant.
In summary, Swee Choon Dim Sum Restaurant is one of the value-for-money dim sum places in Singapore. Venue is clean, brightly lighted and service is reasonably swift. The only bane is that parking lots are limited.
