91) Second Storey Cafe Bar
Finally, after a long period of waiting, the East is finally blooming with more cafes! Currently, there are 5 reputable cafes along the whole stretch of East Coast Road and hopefully we will be able to see more additions in the near future.
Situating at the junction Eng Kiam Place and Marshall Road, unless you are familiar with HIGH Gaming Hub, else this cafe can be easily overlooked or mistaken as the other eateries that are at the first level. With a history as a bar that caters to gamers and dinner crowds, owner Andrew Cheah and his wife injected a new theme by creating a fusion of cafe and bar. With this addition, patrons will now be able to indulge in Second Storey Cafe Bar’s breakfast menu from 930am-3pm daily!
Enough of it’s background, let’s focus on the new cafe that was launched during late April 2014. As mentioned earlier, the main attraction of Second Storey Cafe Bar is their introduction of the breakfast menu as well as their awesome coffee menu.
There are six items on this segment and I had a go on their “Eggs Benny with smoked salmon” and “Asparagus with Miso Butter Scrmabeld Eggs” (pun intended). Reason for my choices — Eggs Benny is a signature breakfast dish among cafes, so it sets as a benchmark for cafes while “Miso Butter” sounded unique.
Frankly, I am never a fan of smoked salmon, but the chef sealed the deal for me. Firstly, the portion of salmon was ridiculously generous! Secondly, their homemade foccacia was crispy, dense and wasn’t soiled despite me snapping shots like no tomorrow. Thirdly, the blend among the egg, salmon, cheese, hollandaise sauce (special recipe) and foccacia was simply heavenly! It definitely redefined my opinion on smoked salmon.
On the next dish, the Miso Butter added a new dimension to how tasty scrambled eggs can be. However, it could have been a little “drier” to give the eggs a little more “character” and texture. It was also served with their foccacia. On top of that, we had their House Special Pizza and Buffalo wings which I thought tasted decent.
Last but not least, their coffee was a double thumbs up for me! Andrew uses Throwback, which is a blend from Papa Palheta, and a single shot for a 5oz. latte. Comparing it to Papa Palheta’s cafe chains, Second Storey has the upper hand. Having said that, it’s definitely worth the try!
Rounding things up, World Cup 2014 is round the corner. So if you are looking for a bar that is air conditioned, comfortable and serves booze and good coffee, this is definitely the place for you!
