Rochor Thai: MSG Free & Authentic Thai Bistro At Joo Chiat

Started out at Rochor Centre Building in 2012, Rochor Thai has found its new home in the midst of Joo Chiat. Painted in bright orange, it is difficult to overlook Rochor Thai eatery. Leading the team is Chef Joel Ong, together with two bona fide chefs from Thailand to bring us the truest form of Thai cuisine from the central province.

Taking pride in their food preparation, dishes at Rochor Thai are 100% abstained from MSG. Talk about having a healthier choice, perhaps this is the place for you!

Here are my orders – Green Curry ($11.8), Pork Collar ($12.80), Salted Egg Squid ($14.80) and Phad Thai ($7.80).

Green Curry – With its bold and well-balanced flavour, it is comparable to what’s offered at Nakhon Kitchen. At the same time, its spiciness wasn’t that strong of a punch, so double thumbs up!

Pork Collar – Nicely grilled and mildly charred, tender and mouth-watering! It’s a pity that the picture turned out other wise due to inappropriate lighting.

Salted Egg Squid – Pure DISAPPOINTMENT. Far cry from any salted egg dishes that I’ve ever tried, however, it was clarified that this is their rendition. Perhaps, just not my cup of tea then.

Phad Thai – Swee la! Love the ‘chewy’ texture of the rice noodle and the mildly sweetened flavour. A little too pricey though.

Till date, Nakhon Kitchen is still my favourite Thai eatery in the aspects of taste and price. Nevertheless, Rochor Thai is another fine Thai eatery to venture if you’ve got a generous budget.

Hi Yaops! Thank you for the article on us!

Just to add on about the salted egg squid.. We are actually in the midst of a revamp, and would be removing it from the menu. 2 main reasons though..
    1) I’m local, so we Singaporeans are used to having the Chinese style that has butter, curry leaves and milk added. The flavour is thus stronger whereas the Thai style is pure salted egg and seasoning.
    2) Because it is pure salted egg, the local salted egg we get cannot match up to it. We wanted to do our own, but we can’t get Duck Eggs here as well. 🙁
But in any case, when you visit Thailand, do try their salted egg squid/prawns. Really very different from our local version, and the salty egg flavours are intense!
    Cheers!!
