Portuguese Custard Tarts: Pastel De Nata In Portugal

Visited Portugal recently for a competition, training and holiday! That place is really enchanting and lined up with breathtaking coastlines with skies painted in blue! During my stay, it was summer, therefore temperature was between 15-28 degrees and accompanied with low humidity and constant cool breeze.

Besides sightseeing, Portuguese custard tarts, known as pastéis de nata were items not to be missed! A typical Portuguese custard tarts have burnt spots on the surface that adds a lovely extra dimension to the flavour. During my trip, I’ve tried the budget type (4 for 1 Euro) as well as legit and authentic ones (1 for 1 Euro).

While both are in Lisbon, however, they are located at different location; Belem and Chiado.

Pasteis de Belem
The one in Belém has a rich history dated back all the way to 1837 (You may read more here) while the one in Chiado seems established a little more recent.

Manteigaria Pastel De Nata

Between the 2, I prefer Manteigaria Pastel De Nata than Pasteis de Belém as the custard is less sweet and the thinly crusted layers were more crispy.

In comparison to those I had in Singapore and Macau, these tarts in Portugal tasted a little different. The crust was a little “thicker” and custard was of different texture than those sold here.

Nevertheless, these awesome sweet treats are something not to be missed when you are in Portugal!
