Old School Canteen At Jalan Benaan Kapal: Cheap Food And Beverage At Tanjong Rhu
Back in those days, Jalan Benaan Kapal was buzzing with activities, a shipyard and a port too. This place is near the area where the Kallang Indoor Stadium is today as well as The Cage.
This road has been named after the activities it was built to serve – Benaan represents building or construction, and Kapal, meaning ship. Looking at the areas around Jalan Banaan Kapal today, it is hard to imagine that it was once a hub of activity.
Located right at the end of the stretch of road is an old school canteen built-in 1960s. Stood the test of time, this canteen still thrives with business with patrons from neighbouring offices.
Food and beverage are relatively cheap as well. With chicken rice priced below $3, mixed rice and vegetables (3 meat, 2 veg and rice) at $4.5, while both Kopi-O and Teh Peng (Iced Milk Tea) at less than $1.5.
Places with authentic old school vibes are hard to find in a developed area such as Singapore and I’m glad I’ve found one! Check out Colbar, a historical cafe at Whitchurch Road which is near Buona Vista.
