Coast and Company: Cycle And Coffee 1

90) Coast and Company

Residents in this district has been fortunately lately with the new launch of Craftsmen Specialty Coffee at Siglap V and now this, Coast and Company. This cafe is similar to Wheeler’s Yard, as it is a bicycle concept cafe, a collaboration of Coast Cycles and coffee boutique, Papa Palheta. On top of that, the food is created by acclaimed chef, Willin Low of Wild Rocket and music experience by Dean Chew, co-founder of “Darker than wax” music label. What I do like about the cafe is it’s minimalist concept of wood, concrete and steel beams, a little of hipster feel which gives the cafe some character.

Coast Cycles is founded by ex-national cyclist, Jansen Tan. His passion drove him to create a urban bicycles (named as Coastliners) that are personalized and compatible to our environment and community. In essence, his bicycles are easy to operate, aesthetically pleasing and low in maintenance. On the 2nd level is a 3000 square foot retail space for their Coastliners while the workshop is tucked at back of the first level with the cafe.

It’s not my ritual to have food, cakes and pastries, therefore I’ve got nothing to comment. It was interesting to know that different beans are used for different types of brewing methods. Such as beans for a drip will be different from making an espresso. What I did notice, which was helpful, was they listed the types of blend they use for different drinks and my flat white was served with Terra Firma. However, I thought that the barista could have given a little more ‘punch’ for my flat white. The closest and most accurate comparison will be with Percolate, as their barista, Alvin, uses the same beans, serving portion of 5oz and single shot. Without hesitation, my vote goes to Percolate as it has a stronger body which gives the coffee a slightly stronger flavour. At the same time, a double shot at Percolate is still lower than Coast and Company.

Overall, I believe this unique concept will be well received by the cycling community as what’s more pleasurable than to have a cuppa and some food with friends or even alone time while knowing that your wheels are having maintenance under good care!
