Cafes Located Within Residential Areas

“Heartland” = The central or most important part of a country, area, or field of activity.

– By OxFord American Dictionary

“Heartlanders was a term popularized in 1999 by then-Prime Minister Goh Chok Tong , to characterize the majority of Singaporeans that are generally poorer, less educated, either working class…lives in HDB housing estates…”

– Adapted from Heartland: A Singapore Perspective by Cassie Ang

I believe the general idea of a heartland comprises residential areas (not necessarily HDB flats) that revolves around crucial amenities such as schools, shopping malls and MRT stations. With the evolution of social structures and family dynamics through time, the precise definition of “Heartland” has evolved as well.

My definition of a ‘Heartland Cafe’: It has to be in the midst of or walking distance from a cluster of residential area.

[Note: Cafes may not be precisely allocated ]
